Is it better to be feared or loved? The answer according to Machiavelli was obvious, thus he chose Fear. This is because it was much safer to be feared than loved. Men are ungrateful, fickle, false, cowardly, covetous, and as long as you succeed they are yours entirely; they will offer you their blood, property, life, and children. He concluded that the leader or ruler should not rely on good faith. Instead, fear is more effective since men are less likely to offend a ruler if they fear him than if they love him.
